Members from The Delta Chi Fraternity and the Sigma Delta Tau and Nu Sigma Chi sororities volunteered their time for set-up, tear down and operation of the Winterfest carnival. The SUNY Cortland students operated various carnival games and even participated with the children in some of the events.
The festival grossed approximately $3,000 to help fund operational costs of the Sports Complex. The complex, which holds a multi-purpose fieldhouse, an ice rink and fitness facility, will also be using the funds to add a new party room.
Sue Covington, office manager and event planner for the complex, says the assistance from the greek community is “invaluable and we could not do the festival without them.”
The festival is in its second year of running. Last spring, the greek community also contributed their efforts for the first Winterfest and will continue its relationship with the J.M. McDonald complex in the future. Much of the rapport with the building can be contributed to Ed Reiser, Greek liaison to the J.M. McDonald Sports Complex and The Delta Chi Fraternity President.
“It was great to see members of SUNY Cortland greek life come together to help positively promote our greek system within the local community,” said Reiser.
The J.M. McDonald’s mission statement:
The J.M. McDonald Sports Complex provides an affordable, family-oriented, multi-purpose facility for our entire population. It is a community resource, committed to meeting the needs of our youth for indoor soccer, hockey, figure skating, lacrosse, 4-H programs and much more.
